Sometimes Anxiety can happen in the very place you feel safe…your home.
Please know from a fellow sufferer you can make yourself feel better quite quickly after you get that anxious feeling and here is how.
🌸 Adjust the light around you. Go into a room where you can put a little lamp or some fairy lights. If you wish to have complete darkness draw the blinds/ curtains or put on a sleeping mask. Light during an anxiety attack will exacerbate the symptoms which will prolong the attack itself.
🌸 Find something comforting to touch. It could be something fluffy, squishy, bumpy or even something like a fidget spinner to divert your attention from your symptoms and concentrate on the feeling of your object. I find this technique really helpful. Also having a shower once your feeling ok and just focus on the sensation you feel as the water hits your skin. A self massage to what areas you can get to yourself is a game changer too.
🌸 Sound plays a big part with Anxiety . Noises are usually heightened during the attack and you feel like you can’t hear nothing but fear. Sounds strange but you get what I mean if you suffer with them. My headphones are always in reach wherever I am. I have what you call earphones in my handbag and then actual headphones in my bed. Listening to a podcast, some acoustic music or nature sounds work a treat. Try guided meditation on an app – I use insight (the free version) its fabulous and I find it really beneficial. Also have some playlists made for these moments so you can automatically pick up your phone and find the songs you know will take it all away at the press of a button.
🌸 You wouldn’t think about your sense of smell when you have anxiety. It’s not so much that it affects your smell but how your smell can help you. Aromatherapy and essential oils are magic. Find your calming scent. I personally love lavender and it’s proven to help in anxious times. You can also get pillow mist and roller balls to put on your pulse points. Light a scented candle of your choice and sit at a table with it as you know they are bloody dangerous if you go off chill out and pay no attention to them.
🌸 If your mouth goes dry when your anxious of course grab a glass of water if that all you can focus on getting. If you’re able to make a hot drink make your favourite. Nostalgic tastes are a healing thing you know. I find a mint or a boiled sweet is perfect. Have yourself a little snack too if you can.
Not all Anxiety leads to an attack so what some people feel or get in a state of anxiousness others may not.
Keep yourself safe and know you can get through anything.
